The Sacred Mountains of Dewa Sanzan

The three mountains of Dewa Sanzan—Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono—have formed one of Japan's most sacred pilgrimage sites for over 1,400 years. Together, they represent the past, present, and future, and completing the journey symbolizes renewal and rebirth.

Choose the 5-day option for a shorter getaway, or the 10-day option for a more extended journey based in Yamagata, with the flexibility to explore across the wider Tohoku region and even the Tokyo area.
Both options offer unlimited travel on the shinkansen, limited express trains, and the KAIRI sightseeing train. While advance reservations are required for KAIRI, JR EAST PASS holders can reserve seats free of charge.
