Sacred Peaks and Coastal Flavors of Shonai
From ancient mountain pilgrimages to a gourmet train along the Sea of Japan, the Shonai region reveals a scenic and culinary discovery of northern Japan—a journey made seamless with the JR EAST PASS.
Just a few hours north of Tokyo lies another side of Japan. In the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture, centuries-old pilgrimage routes, exceptional local cuisine, and serene countryside landscapes invite travelers to slow down and experience a way of Japan shaped by nature, history, and quiet rhythm.
Hop aboard the shinkansen or the KAIRI gourmet sightseeing train as you journey into this beautiful corner of northern Japan with the JR EAST PASS.
The Sacred Mountains of Dewa Sanzan
The three mountains of Dewa Sanzan—Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono—have formed one of Japan's most sacred pilgrimage sites for over 1,400 years. Together, they represent the past, present, and future, and completing the journey symbolizes renewal and rebirth.
Mt. Haguro traditionally marks the beginning of the ancient pilgrimage, and its 2,446-step stone staircase winds through towering cedar forests to one of the region's oldest five-story pagodas, dating back more than 600 years.
At the foot of Mt. Haguro, experience shojin ryori, traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine rooted in centuries of Zen practice. Using seasonal ingredients gathered from the surrounding mountains—including wild vegetables and mushrooms—each meal reflects a philosophy of living in harmony with nature while appreciating every ingredient to its fullest.
KAIRI: Where Coastal Scenery Meets Culinary Craft
After the mountain pilgrimage, the Sea of Japan now awaits.
Welcome aboard KAIRI—a sightseeing train where the journey is defined not only by scenery, but also by its onboard dining experience. With advance reservations for Car No. 4, the dedicated dining car, passengers can enjoy specially prepared meals featuring locally sourced ingredients and showcasing the diverse culinary culture along the route, from traditional Japanese fare to Italian cuisine.
As the train travels along the Sea of Japan coast between Niigata and Sakata, ever-changing views of fishing villages and sprawling rice fields reveal the very landscapes that shape the flavors before you, creating a deeper sense of connection to every dish, every bite.
