Exploring Japan’s Great Hikes From Coast to Alps

While Japan’s cities dazzle, its mountains, coastlines, and wetlands offer something just as captivating yet entirely different: space to breathe and time to slow down.

Miyako and Kesennuma serve as key gateways to the trail and can be reached by JR lines covered by the pass, with local buses or taxis providing the final connection to the trail’s access points.

Located in Nagano Prefecture at around 1,500 meters above sea level, Kamikochi is regarded as one of Japan’s most majestic mountain valleys. Open from mid-April to mid-November, the valley transforms with the seasons, from lush summer greenery to brilliant autumn foliage. It offers something for hikers of all levels, from easy, mostly flat walking trails along the crystal-clear Azusa River to more challenging routes toward the surrounding peaks.

Travel to Matsumoto using the JR EAST PASS, then continue by local bus to Kamikochi.

From high-altitude wetlands to primeval beech forests, Oze National Park and Shirakami Sanchi offer two very different ways to experience Japan’s wild landscapes—both accessible with the JR EAST PASS.

Said to have formed during the Ice Age around 10,000 years ago, Oze National Park is a high-altitude wetland in Gunma Prefecture that can be visited as a day trip from Tokyo. Wooden boardwalks wind through alpine scenery and flowering meadows, offering a refreshing escape from the summer heat for city dwellers.

Further north, Shirakami Sanchi stretches across Aomori and Akita Prefectures and is home to the largest remaining primeval beech forests in East Asia, dating back around 8,000 years. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the area offers routes ranging from easy forest walks to more challenging mountain hikes and is well suited to a two-day visit.
