Known as the “Little Kyoto of Michinoku” (an old name for Tohoku), Kakunodate is a place where the fleeting beauty of each season unfolds alongside well-preserved samurai residences. Flowing from Lake Towada, the crystal-clear waters of Oirase Gorge run alongside one of Japan’s most beautiful walking trails. The peaceful trail passes by moss-covered rocks and cascading waterfalls, while colorful maple and beech trees create a dramatic autumn backdrop for a leisurely hike.

Easily reached by bus from Nikko Station, Irohazaka is one of the most scenic ways to experience Nikko's fall foliage.

For travelers seeking a quieter autumn experience, Yahiko Park offers one of Niigata’s most beautiful foliage views. The park’s Momiji Valley features hundreds of maple trees surrounding the crimson Kangetsu Bridge, creating a scene reminiscent of Japan’s most famous foliage destinations while still retaining a peaceful atmosphere.

Yahiko Park is easily accessible via the JR Yahiko Line, making it an excellent addition to any autumn itinerary in Niigata.

For those looking to venture off the beaten path, Fukuroda Falls in Ibaraki Prefecture is well worth the journey.

One of Japan's three most famous waterfalls, Fukuroda Falls is especially spectacular in autumn, when the 120-meter cascade is framed by brilliant maple and ginkgo trees. An elevator provides easy access to the observation deck, which offers an unobstructed view of the falls.

Fukuroda Falls can be reached by taking the JR Suigun Line to Fukuroda Station, followed by a short bus ride and walk to the falls.

Autumn colors in the mountainous regions of Tohoku generally reach their peak from mid to late October, followed by lower-elevation areas such as Kakunodate and Nikko from early to mid-November.
