Tohoku’s 6 Legendary Summer Festivals
① Aomori Nebuta Festival (Aomori Prefecture)
Giant Illuminated Warriors Parade Through the Streets
Marvel at enormous illuminated floats known as nebuta, crafted from washi (traditional Japanese paper) stretched over bamboo and wire frames. Reaching heights of up to five metres, the floats depict legendary warriors, kabuki theatre scenes, and figures from Japanese mythology. Accompanied by exuberant dancers chanting “Rassera! Rassera!”, the festival transforms the city into a dazzling spectacle of light, music, and movement.

② Akita Kanto Festival (Akita Prefecture)
A 270-Year Tradition of Skill and Balance
Witness performers—perhaps better described as athletes—balance bamboo poles adorned with lanterns weighing up to 50 kilograms atop gigantic bamboo poles on their foreheads, shoulders, or hips. Rooted in around 270 years of tradition, the performance represents a prayer for a bountiful harvest, as the towering lanterns evoke golden stalks of rice swaying beneath the night sky.

Visitors are not only welcome but encouraged to join the dance, embodying the spirit of matsuri (Japanese festivals) as a celebration that brings people together.
